In some instances, parties may find themselves in a conflict in which both sides firmly believe that they are right, and have no desire to compromise or negotiate. In such cases, the University offers an arbitration service.
In arbitration, both parties agree to present their information to a neutral third party (an arbiter) who is responsible for listening to both sides, asking clarifying questions, and determining a decision which the parties agree in advance to abide. In such cases, the parties waive any right to appeal the decision of the arbiter, and agree that the decision is subject to enforcement by the University. Such agreements and decisions can often be utilized in any later court proceeding related to the same incident.
Community Rights & Responsibilities provides arbitration services upon request and will provide a trained professional staff member to serve as an arbiter.
