Facilitation Services

Facilitation is a conflict resolution service provided by the Dean of Students Office. During facilitation, disputants discuss the conflict with the assistance of a third party. The third party can be anyone that both disputants trust. The facilitator may or may not be a neutral, or have a vested interest in the outcome or resolution. Every day supervisors, residence hall staff, friends, and family members are called upon to assist people that they know in resolving their disputes.

Facilitation is particularly helpful in cases where no formalized agreement is necessary, or in situations in which parties simply need to express their feelings and/or concerns, as opposed to resolving the underlying issues. Examples of situations in which facilitation might be useful include behavioral cases in which the complaining party is trying to avoid bringing disciplinary action, or cases involving a misunderstanding where the parties would benefit from having a neutral third party in the room but there is need for a formally mediated agreement.

Facilitation Services are available through Community Rights & Responsibilities. Upon request a trained student, faculty, or staff member will be provided to assist in this process.
