The Civil Rights Movement Trip (CRMT) did more for me than just teach me technicalities of a social justice movement or the characteristics of a good leader. It taught me about myself and how the past has a direct connection with how I view the present. I also learned a lot about how I interact with other ethnic and minority groups.

CRMT has also impacted my level of involvement on campus and being recognized as a more diverse and active leader on campus. It also, influences the way in which I lead other students, and in some cases, how I follow them. I am a much more conscious citizen as a result of attending this trip.

I would recommend CRMT to students who are interested in learning more about active citizenship and what they can do to become a relevant leader on campus and in society. I would also recommend this trip to those that just want to learn more about social issues, so they see beyond the 18” diameter that most people  focus on.

The Civil Rights Movement Trip (CRMT) was a life-changing experience for me. We visited the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis where I learned how to be comfortable in my own skin.Instead of trying to fit in with everyone else, I realized that in order to be accepted, I have to be myself. Since the trip, I’ve taken big strides to let everyone know that I’m not ashamed of who I am and that I do not regret my past decisions or mistakes because they have made into the person I am today. I wouldn’t change that for the world.

I encourage students who are interested in going to CRMT to fully engage themselves fully in the experience. If you ask questions, answer questions, explore, meet new people, and participate in discussion and activities, you’ll get a lot from it. Also, don’t be afraid to open up because even though these people may seem like strangers at first, you’ll find you have a lot more in common than you think throughout the trip.

I learned so much about myself during the Civil Rights Movement Trip (CRMT). My eyes were opened and I began to see that although I thought I was knowledgeable about civil rights, I had never really explored the issue outside of the issues that impact my own race. I learned that there are many groups facing social injustice, even in today’s day and age; that I had turned a blind eye. I began to understand that social injustice still exist today. It is alive and in full affect - but there are differences that I, personally can make.

CRMT impacted me in a major way. I have began to realize the impact difference I can make as a leader. I have began to step up and take a leadership role in my community by trying to make a difference. This trip made me want to start paying attention to what’s really going on in the world. It also made me think about how I am impacted by all social injustices. Because in reality, we are all in the same boat facing the same inequalities.

I strongly recommend CRMT to everyone. It opens one's eyes, not only by the issues that are presented, but also to the different ideas that come out of the many group discussions. It really gave me a push to start changing and expanding the way I think. I think that all students will find this trip to be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to really learn about oneself.
